The official standardized tests for disinfectants
A series of standardised tests has been developed under the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) that has resulted in an EU wide recognised standard to ensure mutual acceptance of the chemicals that are approved.

Veterinary bactericidal - BS EN 1656
Veterinary fungicidal - BS EN 1657
Hygienic handwashing - BS EN 1499

The official standards to evaluate the biocidal activity of disinfectants

-NF EN 1040 –European Standard. Basic bactericidal activity step 1 (microbial reduction >105) against 2 strains: Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15 442 and St. aureus ATCC 6538 in a 1,5, 5, 15, 30, 45, 60 minute contact time at +20°C.
-NF T 72-170 – NF T 72-171 – Determination of the bactericidal activity (spectrum 4 and 5) in a 5 minute contact time at +20°C (microbial reduction >105) in the presence of interfering substances:
Hard water: 60 French degree
Proteins. 1% albumin + 1% yeast extract
Buffer solutions: pH 5 and pH 9
Dirty conditions: Hard water 30° HF + 1% albumin
Clean Conditions: Hard water 30° HF + 0,3% albumin
-pr EN 12054 – Bactericidal activity (Phase 2 / Step 1) of products for hygienic treatment of hands by rubbing and hygienic and surgical hand washing, spectrum 4: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, E. coli, St. aureus, Enterococcus hirae - Temperature 20°C.
Assay conditions according to product application:
-hygienic hand treatment by rubbing (microbial reduction >105 in 1 minute or 30 seconds)
-hygienic hand washing (microbial reduction >103 in 1 minute or 30 seconds)
-surgical hand rubbing (microbial reduction >105 in 5 minute or 1, 2, 3 or 4 minute)
-surgical hand washing (microbial reduction > 103  in 5 minute or 1, 2, 3, or 4 minute).
-NF EN 1499 – Activity of products for hygienic hand washing ( Phase 2/ Step 2) in practical conditions of use. Artificial contamination with E. coli of 12 to 15 voluntaries hands.
Assesment of the micro-organisms counting before and after hand hygienic washing. Total washing time either to 30 seconds and 60 seconds. The reduction factor obtained is compared to those obtained in the same conditions with a standard washing (mild soap).
-NF EN 1500 – Activity of product for hygienic hand treatment by rubbing (Phase 2 / Step2) in practical conditions for use. Artificial contamination with E. coli of 12 to 15 voluntaries hands.
Assesment of the micro-organisms counting before and after hand treatment by rubbing. Total time of rubbing limited to 30 seconds or 60 seconds. The reduction factor obtained is compared to those obtained in the same conditions with a standard product (60% 2-propanol solution).
-pr EN 12791 – Anti-microbial activity of a product on the cutaneous flora, when used for surgical disinfection of hands. Assesment of the effectiveness immediately after use and 3 hours after disinfection.
-NF T 72-190 – Determination of the bactericidal, fungicidal and sporocidal activity. So called germ-carrier method on the strains referenced in the following standards: NFT 72-150 or 151, NFT 72-200 or 201, NFT 72-230 or 231.
-NF T 72-230 or NF t 72-231 – Determination f the sporocidal activity in a 1 hour contact at +20°C, or in a 5 minute contact time at 75°C (microbial reduction >105 ) against B. cereus CIP 7 803, B. subilis CIP 7 718, Cl. Sporogenes CIP 7 939.
-T 72-300 or T 72-301 – Determines  the effectiveness of products on various micro-organisms under the normal conditions of use. Contact time and temperature not defined.
Interfering substances: 30° French Degree hard water or variable depending on the conditions of use.
Microbial reduction: bacteria > 105; yeast and mould  >104 , bacterial spores >103.
-NF EN 1276 – European Standard. Bactericidal Activity of disinfectants used in industrial and public sectors. Step 2. Ps. Aeruginosa ATCC 15442, E. coli ATCC 10536,  St. aureus ATCC 6538, Ent. Hirae ATCC 10541.
In a 5 minute contact time at +20°C. Microbial reduction >104 in the presence of interfering substances:
-dirty conditions: 3 g/l of bovine albumin
-clean conditions: 0,3 g/l of bovine albumin
-additional assays conditions can be used for some applications.
-NF EN 1275 – European Standard. Basic fungicidal application. Step 1 (microbial reduction > 104 ) against 2 strains: Candida albicans ATCC 10 231, Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404 in a 5, 15, 30 or 60  minute contact time +20°C.
-NF EN 1650 -  European Standard. Fungicidal activity of disinfectants used in industrial and public sectors. Step 2 – suspension test with Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Aspergills niger ATCC 16404. Microbial reduction >104  in the presence of interfering substances:
-dirty conditions: 3 g/l bovine albumin
-1% milk
-10 g/l yeast extract
-10 g/l saccharose
-pH 5 and pH 9,0 buffer solutions
-5 g/l sodium laurylsulfate.
The disinfetant products has to be diluted in 30°F hard water.
-NF EN 1656 – European Standard. Bactericidal activity of disinfectants  used in veterinary sector. Phase 2 / Step 1 suspension test in 30 minute at 10°C: Ps. Aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Pr. Vulgaris ATCC 13315, Enterococcus  aureus ATCC 6538, St. Aureus ATCC 6538
Microbial reduction > 105  in the presence of interfering substances :
-low level dc : 3 g/l bovine albumin
-high level dc: 10 g/l yeast extract and 10 g/l bovine albumin.
Additional conditions can be used for some applications.
